Being alert for Cybercrime
Cybercrime is on the increase during the covid-19 pandemic. What are some basic steps to protect yourself from fraud, phishing and cybercrime.
We always endeavour to provide high quality, empathetic and safe family law services. It has come to the attention of the SRA (Solicitor’s Regulatory Authority) and The Law Society, our regulatory bodies, that cybercrime and fraud are on the increase during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Although we do not engage in client accounts or conveyancing, both of which are higher risk areas, we are still taking steps to protect our family law or will & probate clients from cybercrime and fraud across the South East of the UK.
We will never call, text or email and ask you to move your money to another account, or for your banking details. Our banking details will never change during the course of a transaction.
Fraudsters can also use scam telephone calls. These may sound professional and be from a company you recognise but it is important to be aware that just because someone knows your details it does not mean they are genuine.
8 simple steps to take to safeguard yourself:
Never open emails if you do not know the sender.
Even if you know the sender, do not reply to emails which appear unusual. They may have odd spelling mistakes and a strange layout or the email address of the sender may be different.
Refrain from clicking on any links or attachments unless you know the sender for sure and know they are safe.
Keep your software updated across your devices.
Consider the use of reputable antivirus software, run it frequently and keep it updated regularly.
Back up all your data to the cloud or external hard drives
Have a firewall enabled to protect your computer
Shred or destroy all personal information before disposal, do not put personal details straight in to the bin
