In what is known as ‘voice of the child,’ dependent on their age and ability to understand what is going on, children can have their voice heard as part of the mediation process.
All accredited mediators are trained to help parents to make the transition from being a couple to being separated parents in the best way for their children. It is crucial to find an accredited registered mediator who will explain clearly how the process of speaking to your children might work and also whether it is appropriate.
An accredited mediator will be trained as to how to put children at the centre of their decision making, as well as providing specific information about what support children might need when parents separate.
Separation and divorce is a stressful and anxious time of change, for children and parents. Research shows that asking children their views at a time of family separation is helpful to them and their mental health, as well as knowing their voice has been heard. The additional good news is that research also shows that this is helpful to the parents too. It enhances the chance of parents being able to resolve issues between them in family mediation sessions.
