We look at the 14% increase in completed MIAMS, compared to the same quarter last year.

We note the figures published on the 26th of September 2019, reporting that Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAMS) volumes were 14% higher than in the same quarter of 2018.

These figures, published by the Ministry of Justice, also reflect an increase in Mediation outcomes, being 13% higher. Furthermore, this is the highest number of outcomes in the last two years.

We welcome the realisation as to the benefits to many families and couples of mediation. Although every case and person is different, resolving conflict with the focus on engaging all clients and involving them in the active, living process creates opportunities. It gives individuals more say in their futures and how things will be done, allows a forum for discussion and productive decisions, as well as structuring and managing time better than waiting for expensive and protracted court cases.

In many cases, mediation shifts the focus to solutions and balance and allows people to move forward with their lives. The number of successful mediation outcomes reflected in these statistics is positive form individuals whose lives may be in turmoil, but also relieves stress on the legal system
