Applying online for a divorce
The digital online system for divorce was introduced in May 2018 by the Ministry of Justice.
The President of the Family Division, Sir Andrew McFarlane, said that litigants in person have been able to conduct their divorce proceedings entirely online, with nearly 80% of them choosing the digital system.
The online service was opened to legal professionals following a successful pilot, which included more than 100 firms. The Ministry of Justice introduced a digital application process in May 2018 as part of a wider £1bn modernisation programme.
Tony Roe, a consultant at Reading firm Penningtons Manches Cooper, was told by HM Courts & Tribunals Service that more than 70,000 people have applied online so far.
