Telling your child you still love them following a divorce or separation
Although every family is unique and will have their own personal way of working through divorce or separation, there are some helpful grounding ideas from Resolution, a network of family law professionals helping work with families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way.
Involving your child or children in the process, including emphasising that you still love them and recognising the change may be hard, is one of the most important things you can give your child as a parent.
If possible, once you and your partner have decided to split up or divorce, you need to plan how, together, you will tell your children.
Resolution state that: ‘If possible, it is best if both of you can talk to your children together. However, this is only appropriate if you are able to manage your feelings and opinions about the divorce or separation’.
It may be best for each of you to have separate discussions, if talking together to your children will heighten tension.
