Supporting children through parental divorce or separation

Supporting children through parental divorce or separation

As the new NHS report on the Mental Health of Children and Young People in England, 2020 is published, the findings show household arguments can have an impact on children’s mental health.

The report finds that, among 11 to 16 year old girls, 63.8% with a probable mental disorder had seen or heard an argument among adults in the household, compared with 46.8% of those unlikely to have a mental disorder.

Resolution’s Parenting Charter sets out what children should be able to expect from their parents if they are separating and what separating parents need to do in the interests of their children.

It is easy for adults to forget what it is like to be a child, distracted as they may be by their own stress and conflict, including feelings of hurt and fear for the future. Making time for you and attending to your own hurt and pain can also give the resilience to withstand a difficult divorce.
