Divorce and separation updates: The 'most expensive family feud in history'
Division of assets following divorce or separation can prove tricky to negotiate and enforce. A high-conflict case, which continues to run after 4 years, involves a UK court award of £453 million.
There are many alternatives to family courts for divorce and separation and it is to be hoped that splits can be amicable for clients and their children. Acrimonious cases do exist though, such as the case of ‘the most expensive family breakdown in history.’ This case, being heard in a London court, relates to a divorce case which includes the battle over the division of a £1billion fortune.
Tatiana Akhmedova is accusing her ex-husband, Farkhad Akhmedov, and their son Temur Akhmedov of hiding hundreds of millions in assets in order to avoid paying the settlement awarded to her by the high court in 2016. The settlement, which was a 41.5% share of the £1billion family fortune, remains the highest awarded in UK history. It remains outstanding despite repeated enforcement attempts.
The case has attracted much interest due to the large financial sums and lavish assets involved in the dispute. These include luxury mansions, a super-yacht, a helicopter, private jet and lavish art collection. In addition, Farkhad Akhmedov is an oligarch and known as an ally of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
