Latest published family mediation statistics comparable to pre-pandemic levels

The Ministry of Justice figures for this latest quarter continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, although changes to the way the family mediation services operates has boosted recovery.

Family courts and other parts of the justice system are running a reduced service.

Figures published by the Ministry of Justice showed that Mediation Information and Assessment Meetings (MIAMs) increased by 8 per cent between July and September 2020 compared to the previous year quarter.

Mediation outcomes were unchanged and starts were 3% lower over the same period.

The Ministry of Justice figures demonstrate volumes are comparable to pre-pandemic levels and show almost full recovery, which may be in part due to changes in how in the mediation service is operated. There is no requirement for face-to-face sessions, MIAMS can take place via video link remotely.
