BBC article examines the financial cost of splitting-up
Fears over the cost of getting advice from a solicitor are leading couples to go through the divorce process alone, but this can prevent a fair settlement; particularly regarding pensions, child and financial arrangements.
In 2019, more than 100,000 UK couples got divorced. This significant number has also been affected by the pandemic, which has put many more relationships under tremendous strain through lockdowns, remote schooling and working at home remotely, with a quarter of people saying their relationship to their partner deteriorated over lockdown.
However, the financial hurdles can mean that couples are putting divorce off, or else having to represent themselves, which can mean not getting appropriate advice and a just, fair settlement or outcome.
