Cafcass figures show drop in private family law cases in August
Cafcass (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service) collect data for comparison on divorce and separation, sometimes called ‘private law’, where parents or carers cannot agree on arrangements for their children and need to go to family court.
Private law refers to family court applications made following a divorce or separation about the arrangements for children. This can include considerations such as where a child will live or with whom a child will spend time proportionally.
Cafcass reports that they received 3,386 new private law cases in August 2021. This is 293 cases (8.0%) less than the same period in 2020, where these cases involved 5,130 children.
This figure is 414 (9.9%) less children than August 2020.
