Family Law Supervision
Working with people, families and emotions is complex and draining. To be the best we can be for clients, family law supervision for family lawyers, mediators and arbitrators is becoming increasingly recognised as raising standards and resilience in practice.
Supervision has been a mandatory requirement for many years for many psychotherapy and counselling professionals. It is a space to talk about relationships, good and bad, with clients, colleagues and other professionals alike to help distinguish what is personal and what may be being evoked in the relationship.
For high quality mediation and family law services to clients, this is essential. The emotions of separation, divorce, co-parenting, finances and sorting out arrangements for children are likely some of the most important decisions a client will make in their life. How can we best support clients? By supporting ourselves to be the best possible, most flexible, responsive, regulated professionals we can be. That is where supervisory input is essential.
Supervision recognises and respects how demanding and rewarding the work is. It is necessarily independent of line management to prevent enmeshment and confusion. It respects your pace, individuality, and is tailored to individual needs. It is not about ‘being told what to do’ but is a truly collaborative process of learning and engagement.
In supervision, a confidential, safe and comfy space is on offer to express and explore what may be going on, how this impacts client work, how ethical the work is and how to hold tension between conflicting areas. In mediation and family law, conflict is inevitable and understandable as clients seek to regain control and stability over changes in their lives. To respect these needs and collaborate effectively and with compassion, we start by looking at how we can offer compassion and care to ourselves to both remain with clients, and also keep our professional ‘hat’ on.
Family law supervision also allows us to review where we are on our career paths, wonder about whether changes need to be made.
